INTERVIEW WITH PHAROS OF TEAM ZSNES
Oct 31st, 1998
Interview conducted by : Wolfy
<EliteGamer> When did you join the
Zsnes team, and what is it that you do?
<Pharos> I joined the zsnes team between .400 and .635,
nearly a month or so before the release of .635.My purpose was code reorganization, to
make it more portable, easier to work with. for example, to compile zsnes, it would
normally take 10 minutes, but i objectized it, to only recode what we changed.
<EliteGamer> How long have you been programming
and in what language?
<Pharos> i would say nearly 6 years, my first lanuage
was asm, using debug.exe, i have gone though pascal, basic, asm on 68000 and 80x86, and
many more, but mostly in C,I am anti C++
<EliteGamer> ok, questions for other people... c4
chip works now in znes?? and street fighter alpha 2.. runs now in zsnes??
<Pharos> hrmm, I don't believe either one of them are
true at least I haven't experienced seeing them work, or active development on them
<EliteGamer> what about the shots of Tales of
Phantasia, what did you include to emulate this game?
<Pharos> Working with drkforce (not sure of all the
nicks that helped though), information was supplied that was vital to adding the mapper
for the 48mb rom
<EliteGamer> has the ZSNES team ever considered working
on another emu?
<Pharos> not since any of the time of current zsnes
development, i do believe that demo and zsknight though about a different system, before
they actually coded a snes emu
<EliteGamer> What is the relationship between team
ZSNES and team Snes9x, do you guys share info?
<Pharos> We do share information, and sometimes even
code, as i recall dsp1 and superfx emulation in snes9x is strait from zsnes source.
<EliteGamer> ok, have any of the Zsnes or Snes9x(as you
know) teams been aproached with legal action for any company?
<Pharos> I haven't heard of any legal approach towards
zsnes, at least not during my newstanding position, as for snes9x, there has been times,
at least reported on www pages, and emu news sites, where snes9x had to deal with
nintendo, but I do not know the severity nor trueness of them reports.
<EliteGamer> what was the hardest part of codeing for
zsnes (other than FX emualation)?
<Pharos> Well my involvement, was more time consumming
then difficult, as for the project as a whole, dsp1, even with documentation, is proving
to be difficult to fully code. Along with working towards 100% perfect sound.
<EliteGamer> What improvements can we look forward to
in the next update of Zsnes?
<Pharos> Well as always, the usual bug fixes will be in
store. As for any special works, i am not sure what I am allowed to talk about and what i
am not. I am sure that networking code will have a decent amount of time put into it so
perhaps in newer versions, that will work out.if all works out, tcp/ip might be in store,
but one never knows for sure.
<EliteGamer> well it's silly question time, what was
the fondest memory of your childhood, your first love and Your greatest fear...
<Pharos>I didn't truely love anybody until nearly the
end of high school I have always been one that focused on personality, and expecially ones
mind, because whenever i spoke, everybody would look at me funny, and try to pretend they
understood so for a relationship, i needed a girl who could understand me well towards the
end of highschool, I finally met this girl, and although we never managed to get into a
relationship, she was my first true love. She combined a willingness to learn, with beauty
and a personality a guy would kill for. Right now, i am out of contact, but when we see
eachother, a very fast run to hug, is usually in a store.
My greatest fear is actually being alone or unrecognized. I try my best, to work to
produce things to get my name known, I have coded BNC, genux, and many other little
things, trying to be known. Surprisingly, bnc gets me more messages a day then zsnes does,
and zsnes is much bigger of a project.
I remember, before i moved to this extremely unpopulated town I lived in a rather big city
in colorado and surprisingly, one of my fondest memories, was the time I was in an
avalance we had a brono, which is one of my favorite vehicles and we went out hot rodding
in the snow. Well driving though a vally, hit a soft spot in the road, so as you can
guess, lots of pedel stopping, and loud engine roaring. That caused the snow to start
moving, and when it was over, we had moved sideways, all the way across the road,
and into the ditch on the other side. The thing that made it fond, was how we got out. My
dad, who is an all around macguyver kind of guy dug out, traveled about half a mile, and
hotwired a backhoe at a nearby construction place and drove it back and dug us out.
<EliteGamer> Well thank you very much for your time and
patience, I wish you the best in your future work and look forward to maybe another
interview
<Pharos> I have really appreciated it, and i look
forward to another interview, anytime :)
